Ritu Khanduri Bhushan was born in Nainital on 29 January 1965 in a military family. Originally a resident of Radha Balabh Puram village in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, her father Major General (Retd.) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri was then an army officer. After retirement, he contested the Lok Sabha elections and won and became a minister in the Vajpayee government. He also became the 4th Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and is a popular name in the politics of the state. Ritu’s early education coincided with her father’s military postings at various places and she graduated from Raghunath Girls’ College, Meerut. After that she did post-graduation from University of Rajasthan and obtained Diploma in Journalism from Delhi. From 2006 to 2017, she also served as faculty at Amity University, Noida.
