Ritu Khanduri Bhushan was born in Nainital on 29 January 1965 in a military family. Originally a resident of Radha Balabh Puram village in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, her father Major General (Retd.) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri was then an army officer. After retirement, he contested the Lok Sabha elections and won and became a minister in the Vajpayee government. He also became the 4th Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and is a popular name in the politics of the state. Ritu’s early education coincided with her father’s military postings at various places and she graduated from Raghunath Girls’ College, Meerut. After that she did post-graduation from University of Rajasthan and obtained Diploma in Journalism from Delhi. From 2006 to 2017, she also served as faculty at Amity University, Noida.
She was born on January 29, 1965, in Nainital district of Uttarakhand state. She completed her 10th grade at Loreto Convent School, New Delhi, and her 12th grade at Sofia Inter College, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, she pursued B.A. (Hons) from Meerut University and M.A. (History) from Rajasthan University, Jaipur. Alongside, she also obtained a diploma in journalism from New Delhi.
After completing her studies, she got married to Mr. Rajesh Bhushan, a native of Khal, Badrinath, Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. He is a distinguished officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), batch of 1987, and has served as Secretary in the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. During the COVID crisis, Mr. Rajesh Bhushan was entrusted with the responsibility of Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare by the Honorable Prime Minister.
After marriage, she resided in extremely backward, underdeveloped, sensitive, tribal, and Naxal-affected areas of Bihar, such as Chapra, Gopalganj, Chhattisgarh, Bhabhua, Sasaram, etc. Despite living in such sensitive areas, she has always worked for the development of the marginalized, oppressed, and disadvantaged sections of society through various Self halo organisations which focused on social, economic, education and health sectors. Mrs Ritu Khanduri Bhushan primary area of interest has been to ensure the overall development of women.
Her late grandparents, Mr. Jay Vallabh Khanduri and Mrs. Durga Devi Khanduri, hailed from Radhavallabhpur village, Pauri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand, both revered freedom fighters. Mrs. Khanduri's grandmother's brothers included the late Mr. Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Cabinet Minister in the Central Government. Her father, Major General (Retd.) Mr. Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri, served the Indian Army for 27 years, participating in three wars. He received the prestigious Service Medal from the then President of India, His Excellency Mr. Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, in recognition of his valor and bravery. Post-retirement, at the urging of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Mr. Khanduri served as a Member of Parliament from Pauri Garhwal five times and held the position of Chief Minister of Uttarakhand twice.
In 2000, she relocated from Bihar to Delhi and revived the NGO "Jai Durga Samajik Utthan Sansthan" in honor of her grandparents. Since then, the organization has been providing daily meals for nearly 50 patients and their families at AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital. Additionally, it hosts blood donation camps, health camps, and distribution drives for spectacles, hearing aids, and wheelchairs, catering to the needs of the differently-abled and elderly.
Between 2003 and 2005, she served as a senior manager at the renowned Banarsi Das Chandiwal Seva Sansthan Trust in Delhi. Subsequently, in 2006, she assumed the role of a business executive at SMK Industries Limited. From 2006 to 2017, she dedicated herself as a history professor at Amity International University, Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Throughout these diverse roles, she has maintained a strong connection to her roots and Uttarakhandi culture, embracing its people, cuisine, and traditional attire.
In 2014, she became inspired by the Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao campaign initiated by the Honorable Prime Minister in Uttarakhand. Subsequently, she organized awareness campaigns in Rudraprayag, Karnprayag, Gopeshwar, and various other locations across Uttarakhand. Recognizing her impactful initiatives, the Bharatiya Janata Party nominated her as a candidate from the Yamkeshwar Assembly constituency in the 2017 Legislative Assembly elections. She emerged victorious, securing the historic seat.

In 2017, the Bharatiya Janata Party appointed her to the Pradesh Executive Committee and recognized her eloquence and spotless reputation, appointing her as the state's spokesperson. Within the Legislative Assembly, she was named to a permanent committee by the Speaker, consistently championing women's issues. Impressed by her effectiveness and work ethic, the Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party appointed her as the President of the Pradesh Mahila Morcha in 2020. The state of Uttarakhand took pride in her recognition by the renowned Fame India magazine in July 2020, selecting her as one of the top 50 legislators in the country, acknowledging her as a progressive voice from Uttarakhand.
Milestones of Leadership: A Journey of Election Triumph and Legislative Excellence In the 2022 Legislative Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party nominated her as a candidate from the Kotdwar Assembly constituency, where she secured a historic victory. Recognized for her efficiency, eloquence, and impeccable reputation, she was unanimously elected as the first female Speaker of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. During her tenure, she also organized study tours to various countries.
